چکیده

We perform a special number field sieve discrete logarithm computation in a 1024-bit prime field. To our knowledge, this is the first kilobit-sized discrete logarithm computation ever reported for prime fields. This computation took a little over two months of calendar time on an academic cluster using the open-source CADO-NFS software. Our chosen prime p looks random, and p−1 has a 160-bit prime factor, in line with recommended parameters for the Digital Signature Algorithm. However, our p has been trapdoored in such a way that the special number field sieve can be used to compute discrete logarithms in Fp, yet detecting that p has this trapdoor seems out of reach. Twenty-five years ago, there was considerable controversy around the possibility of backdoored parameters for DSA. Our computations show that trapdoored primes are entirely feasible with current computing technology. We also describe special number field sieve discrete log computations carried out for multiple weak primes found in use in the wild.

The Tower Number Field Sieve

The security of pairing-based crypto-systems relies on the difficulty to compute discrete logarithms in finite fields Fpn where n is a small integer larger than 1. The state-of-art algorithm is the number field sieve (NFS) together with its many variants. When p has a special form (SNFS), as in many pairings constructions, NFS has a faster variant due to Joux and Pierrot. We present a new NFS v...

Optimization of the MOVA Undeniable Signature Scheme

This article presents optimization results on the recent MOVA undeniable signature scheme presented by Monnerat and Vaudenay at PKC ’04 as well as its generalization proposed at Asiacrypt ’04 which is based on a secret group homomorphism. The original MOVA scheme uses characters on Zn and some additional candidates homomorphisms were proposed with its generalization. We give an overview of the ...

Quantum factoring, discrete logarithms, and the hidden subgroup problem

Amongst the most remarkable successes of quantum computation are Shor’s efficient quantum algorithms for the computational tasks of integer factorisation and the evaluation of discrete logarithms. In this article we review the essential ingredients of these algorithms and draw out the unifying generalization of the so-called abelian hidden subgroup problem. This involves an unexpectedly harmoni...

Quantum computation of discrete logarithms in semigroups

We describe an efficient quantum algorithm for computing discrete logarithms in semigroups using Shor’s algorithms for period finding and discrete log as subroutines. Thus proposed cryptosystems based on the presumed hardness of discrete logarithms in semigroups are insecure against quantum attacks. In contrast, we show that some generalizations of the discrete log problem are hard in semigroup...

A classical one-way function to confound quantum adversaries

The promise of quantum computation and its consequences for complexity-theoretic cryptography motivates an immediate search for cryptosystems which can be implemented with current technology, but which remain secure even in the presence of quantum computers. Inspired by recent negative results pertaining to the nonabelian hidden subgroup problem, we present here a classical algebraic function f...
